The Soul's Blood

1.
Leaves fall As in a dream Drawing my eyes up To passing clouds As in a dream I am walking. I'm walking by faith I'm walking by trust Down to the river... —All ways to the river— ...of dust Not everything has changed Not everyone is gone You are now here with me The sky is unendingly long As in a dream As in a dream You are now here with me You are now here with me to let me be
2.
The Tower 06:04
The creaks of time gather for one last shout on this night Collapsing together We remember How to sing In this darkness so bright The leaves give their applause As the wind breathes them to life. The tower comes crashing down, A final memory of future strife. The gentle bird moves on, Flying among fallen trees And weathervane rust. When you're in that world, I guess There's a real difference Between clouds and dust As the wind rolls on, Leaves fall. Will barren trees survive? Black birds circle above. Every watered creed has dried. Not everything has changed Not everyone is gone At once The sky is unendingly long As in a dream As in a dream You are now here with me To help me see Not everything has changed Not everyone is gone
3.
I know my thoughts, and I know that I cannot let them live I know my thoughts, and I know that they hide the truth that you give So it’s through your gates that I crawl and into your courts that I call, To keep myself away from my thoughts. Out of this world Out of this mind Out of this world. Now, this is being alone. Into your sadness Into your mind Trying to right my wrongs... Trying to make sense of time... As the winds roll on, Only barren trees survive. The gentle bird is gone. Every watered creed has dried.
4.
I Felt nothing Saw nothing Sensed nothing This forest is an empty room Bruised knuckles in the dark. Splinters from Heaven’s door Fallen on the floor When it was day I wished for the night When it was night I wished for the day The agony of prayer The agony of prayerlessness I can never be master... I can never gain control Not only am I saved by grace— Must I live by it as well? Must I live by grace in prayer? What’s the point in praying When I know You’re in control? "Before I call... You will answer. While I speak... You have already heard." (Isaiah 65:24) There’s no point in praying When I am in control.
5.
Place your hand over mine. Guide my sail Into the wind. Red turned funereal brown: Desolate— My true condition The approach of the coming winter Has forced me deeper inside. Preserving and strengthening A resolute silence Not merely the absence of noise, The silence formed a substance. The silence truly spoke for me. The silence did not seek an answer The silence did not seek forgiveness... The silence declared that You are righteous... and I a sinner. Now that it’s quiet I only miss the sounds Of you
6.
My soul is parched A thirst that leads to despair A thirst that makes me aware A thirst that leads to prayer I thirst to find you there Trying to hide the separation of sin Separates me all the more. Frightened by a hardened heart, I give even my silence to God As leaves fall As fall leaves I see the forest through the trees I see the answer in front of me: Part of your life My life must be And now My prayer is not toward a god of heaven My prayer is not to a god far off My prayer is toward the God who is closer to me than I am aware who is closer to me than my deepest care My God, I thirst to find you there
7.
Blessed, holy mourning The prayer of tears No more silent cries No more dry eyes, No more deaf ears, And a cold heart. No more silent cries. Let me receive the gift of tears. Have mercy on me. “In your deep floods Drown my faults and fears; Nor let [Your] eye See sin, but through my tears.” (Phineas Fletcher. 1580–1650. 222. A Litany) Have mercy on me. And, Even when my eyes are dry… ...Keep my soul In tears...
8.
Stay Awake 06:30
What’s the point in praying When I give to you control? Have I finally reached the point When I give to you control? The blessedness of a winter That has lost its covering In you I place my trust In you I place my fears Let me walk through the river of dust Overflowing with sinners’ tears Stay awake and watch Not my will, but yours be done. I lift my arms, and Into your arms I lift My soul, My life. My children, My wife. I lift my arms, and Into your arms I lift My hopes, my dreams. My anger, my enemies. My fears, my tears... ...And I walk away. Stay awake and watch.
9.
Some things will remain dead And it is better that way It is better this way Better dead than alive or captive Some things will remain dead Some things will begin to live Now that Father Winter has gone. As Spring brings me to the precipice, Will I fall, Fully satisfied, Fully at rest? It is never easy letting go. Death to the things as they have always been. Reforming Conforming A meditation Upon that death Which sets me free Upon that resurrection Which brings new life to me ... As the winds roll on, The barren trees revive.
10.
Close to the earth Open to the sun Open to the rain Cultivating silence Close to the earth Close to the pain I am never less alone than when alone Left a corpse, I am more alive than I've ever been Content To hear no human voices To be free from the dust storm The need for something More than solitude More than the perfect time To be alone Somehow to find solitude in the midst of the multitude To catch up with you, I needed to slow down. —Godspeed— Cultivating silence Close to the earth Close to the pain
11.
Ending at the falls, I followed the sun In and out of the trees To see Your shadow Cast over fallen leaves The roar of the river Swallowed my cry As time Swallowed the sun My hands in praise held high My voice low in manic shouts Psalms from distant memories Songs of future symmetries Inviting a claim on my doubt Inhabiting your praise, The choir of life all around me Breathing the name of God In Exaltation Adoration Thanksgiving Listening stillness Healing sorrows My soul ascends to self-forgetting Upon the holy hill processional Enter his gates Enter his courts... Are there tears in the eyes of God? Is it tears that cleanse the soul’s blood? When I'm alone, I'm never alone... These barren trees have revived. The gentle bird will return— As in a dream. After everything has changed, After everyone has gone, You will remain.
12.
I didn't have to look far I didn't have to look wide You are the morning tide You are the evening spark You are behind the fallen tower You are with me in the dark You are waiting... For me You are giving me room For me to seek You are the God who is hidden For your glory cannot be refused. Clouds have hidden your face Because You want me to want You For You —You want to be pursued. So, You are hiding... Somewhere Between clouds and dust You are waiting... Somewhere Between faith and trust You are waiting... You are waiting, hiding… ...You are wanting to be pursued. Sometimes without a sound, You are waiting, waiting... Leaving footprints on the ground, You are waiting... When it seems you are not around, —In a sky unendingly long— You are waiting, wanting... ...Wishing... to be found

about

The Soul's Blood, Sombre Holiday’s sixth full-length album, contains twelve new songs that explore the longing for and the painful steps toward a more intimate relationship with God the creator. The album weaves spiritual thirst, hunger, and awakening through ethereal passages and brilliant moments of metal.

Continuing the band's history of blending guitars, keyboards, drums, and violin, The Soul's Blood is 70 minutes of intense, soul-wrestling contemplation—another powerful melancholic-melodic metal journey.

90/100 "Highly recommended!" -- Andrew Rockwell

"[P]owerfully moody soundscapes from this excellent group that successfully mines the thoughtful melancholy of bands like Katatonia, Porcupine Tree and Riverside but with their own unique spin including great use of violin and acoustic guitars to really add drama to their music." – ProgMetalZone
